Position Overview
India House seeks a Citizenship Program Coordinator for its “Path to Citizenship” program. This program aims to inform, educate, and train lawful permanent residents (LPRs) or green card holders in Greater Houston who are eligible to become citizens. The position will primarily serve LPRs of Indian origin, but services are open to the broader Houston community. The coordinator will increase civic engagement by highlighting the benefits of citizenship, including the right to vote, freedom to travel with a U.S. passport, the ability to bring family members to the U.S., eligibility for federal jobs, and the opportunity to participate in local elections. This is a full-time, office-based position in Houston that requires extensive travel within the metro region. Remote work is not available.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and implement the “Path to Citizenship” program.
- Inform, educate, and train lawful permanent residents (LPRs) of Indian origin and others about the path to naturalization over two years.
- Build relationships with local partners, including USCIS, the Indian Consulate, Indian community organizations, faith-based Indian organizations, immigration lawyers, media catering to the Indian community, nonprofits serving immigrants, and county and city government agencies in Greater Houston.
- Provide resources for lawful permanent residents facing financial difficulties and limited English proficiency to apply for naturalization.
- Offer bi-monthly information sessions and monthly workshops on the naturalization process.
- Partner with local immigration law firms to seek pro bono services for lawful permanent residents with difficult cases for naturalization.
- Build awareness in the Indo-American and other communities about the importance of the naturalization process.
- Strategically partner with Naturalization Program Managers at Harris County and the City of Houston to coordinate and track naturalization efforts.
Reporting
The Citizenship Program Coordinator will report to the Executive Director of India House.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of professional experience in community organizing and/or developing and implementing nonprofit programs and initiatives.
- Strong familiarity with the Indian diaspora in Houston and knowledge of one or more Indian languages preferred.
- Experience with naturalization programming at the local and/or state level.
- Proven ability to build and manage relationships with relevant partners.
- Experience in the immigration policy field, preferably at the state and local levels.
- Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with other staff and organizations; ability to work with groups and individuals across the political spectrum.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Must have a driver’s license and own transportation.
