Free Food Distribution

We provide free groceries to families in need regardless of their race, social or economic status, citizenship, immigration status, or religion. India House believes that no one in our community should go hungry.  The free food distribution is organized bi-monthly on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of a month with the help of our staff members and volunteers.

According to the Houston Health Department, 23.3% of the people in Houston/ Harris county do not have access to food.  Almost 1 in 4 children are food insecure.

The situation has worsened since COVID-19 where food insecurity has jumped to 24.4%. It has been reported many times that healthy food produce and grocery is rarely accessible to low-income and underserved areas. India House took the initiative and started the free food distribution program on September 25, 2018 in collaboration with Houston Food Bank.

Food insecurity, defined by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as limited availability or uncertain ability to access nutritionally adequate foods, is associated with chronic health problems including diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and mental health issues including major depression.

India House’s Free Food Distribution today is a welcome relief for many people who are struggling to put food on the table due to economic hardship, job loss, or other circumstances beyond their control. Our organization is constantly helping those in need by providing free food distribution services to the local community, offering not only basic staples but also fresh produce to promote healthy eating habits.

Child food insecurity has serious long-term implications for the child’s health and development. Lack of access to healthy food often has a negative impact on an individual both physically and mentally. India House’s Free Food Distribution Program addresses hunger insecurity in the entire Greater Houston Area.

The food distribution at India House happens with the help of volunteers.

We are lucky to have the support of our volunteers who happily come and join us for the food distribution drive.

Tasks proudly handled by our volunteers:

  • They offload the food from the truck
  • sort the food items,
  • packing them into bags and then
  • distribute them to the people

They even put the items in the car trunks of the people who are taking the food home.

It’s a great opportunity to give back to the Houston community.

What is Houston Food Bank?

Houston Food Bank is one of the largest food banks in the country, and it partners with many organizations to provide food to those in need. They distribute millions of pounds of food each year to local food pantries, soup kitchens, and other organizations that serve the hungry. Know more about Houston Food Bank.

India House Houston is just one of the many partners that the Houston Food Bank works with to provide free food distribution services to those who need it most.

Free Food Distribution centers near you may offer different types of food, depending on what is available at the time. Many centers offer non-perishable items like canned goods, pasta, and rice. However, India House offers fresh produce like fruits and vegetables through mobile units which are available at our premises for 3-4 hours on the day of Food Distribution. You can come during the defined time and get the food available. Information of all future food distribution dates are available on our website.

This is a great way to promote healthy eating habits and provide essential nutrients to those who may not have access to fresh produce otherwise.

India House Houston’s Free Food Distribution program is open to anyone who needs it, regardless of their background or circumstances. We understand that anyone can fall on hard times, and we are committed to helping those in need.

Free Food Distribution is not just about providing food to those in need; it’s also about building community and creating connections. By volunteering or donating to organizations like the Houston Food Bank or India House Houston, you can make a difference in the lives of those who are struggling. Whether it’s giving your time or making a financial contribution, every little bit helps.

Through our Free Food Distribution programs twice in a month, we ensure that everyone has access to healthy and nutritious food. If you are in need of assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out to your local food bank or to us at India House. And if you are able to give back, consider volunteering or donating to help those in need. Together, we can make a difference in our communities and help ensure that no one goes hungry.
